You weren’t made to survive on scraps.
Being able to receive is crucial to making money in your business.
A couple of beautiful lines from Tosha Silver’s Abundance Prayer:
“And, equally, let me feel wildly open to receiving.”
“May I feel worthy to receive in every possible way.”
So powerful.
Another essential component of opening yourself to abundance is your ability to receive.
I remember one of my healers once said to me, “You settle for crumbs when that’s all you’re used to getting.” She was talking about love.
Money is no different.
If, as a child, you only received scraps of love, tossed your way like bits of meat, you likely gobbled them up like a starved animal.
Any time you were given a snuggle, a kind word, a moment of being seen, praised, understood, or celebrated, you soaked it in like a dry sponge.
Because, oh my god, there it was...the seeing, the witnessing, the nourishment you needed to grow.
And while your caregivers may have been doing the best they could, sometimes it’s simply not enough to teach you that you are worthy of love, without having to settle for scraps.
So that’s what you get used to... scraps of love. Love that trickles in with fear, shame, or conditions attached.
“I better not want too much. I might scare them away. This is enough. At least I have something.”
So you keep giving, hoping to receive just enough in return to survive.
Unfortunately, people who overgive often struggle to receive.
And women? We’ve been conditioned to be world-class overgivers.
We’re taught to be the martyr, to suppress our needs, and to accept the scraps in return for our selfless service.
You keep giving. Even when it pisses you off.
That resentment? It clogs the flow.
Because there’s a deep longing inside...to feel more, to be seen more, to be cherished more.
A nourished flow requires movement in both directions. You must give and receive.
And it’s the same with money.
You get used to the scraps.
Clients trickle in. They pay late. They pay the bare minimum. They ghost you.
And still, you accept it. Because it feels familiar.
But you want more. You want freedom, security, consistency, flexibility, space, and ease.
That inability to receive? It becomes an invisible shell around you, keeping money out.
You must learn to receive in order to make more money.
How do you know if you have a hard time receiving?
You deflect compliments and avoid eye contact when someone offers one.
You’re generous with others but stingy with yourself. (Your kid “needs” $150 shoes while yours are falling apart—but “as long as they’re okay, I’m fine.”)
It’s hard to receive gifts.
When you do receive something, you feel guilty or immediately feel the need to repay it.
You struggle to let others go out of their way for you.
You avoid emotional intimacy.
You endure your own discomfort so others don’t have to feel theirs.
Accepting help feels uncomfortable, even impossible.
You’re hyper-independent: “If I want it done right, I have to do it myself.”
You sabotage relationships by pushing others away and staying guarded.
You avoid vulnerability and keep your needs and feelings hidden.
Receiving is nourishment. It fuels your mind, body, and soul.
And yet... it’s the thing we neglect the most.
We just keep giving and giving until we’re empty.
So, how does one learn to receive?
First, understand this: the difficulty started a long time ago.
Receiving is reflected in your breath.
In the Cycle of Abundance, receiving is the depth of your inhale. A full-bodied “Yes. Thank you. I accept.” ~Victoria Castle
So begin there. Feel into your inhale as a gateway to receiving. You are receiving life, prana, all day long.
Therefore, you are worthy. Simply because you breathe.
If only it were that easy to shift your mindset and fully embrace your worth.
But like I said, it’s a practice.
Tosha’s Abundance Prayer is a beautiful start. It gently chips away at the invisible wall built from years of feeling unworthy to receive.
She recommends repeating the mantra:
“It is easy for me to receive.”
Say it throughout your day—while shopping, paying bills, marketing, walking, showering.
Receiving is a two-way street. You must give and receive to allow life to flow fully through you.
That means letting life move through you, uninterrupted and without judgment.
Letting it all in: joy, sorrow, discomfort, celebration, grief, growth.
If we block any of it, we block the whole flow, including money.
So once again, I return to this truth: You must be with and process your emotions.
When emotions are denied or unprocessed, they get stuck. That invisible wall? It becomes even more impenetrable.
Find a way to process your life, your experiences, your feelings.
“The more the hands open to receive, the less they clutch at everything.” —Tosha Silver
Receiving happens all day long—every time you breathe and every time you spend.
It’s so easy to feel weighed down by bills. But nearly every time money goes out, something has come in.
Start noticing the exchange. And say:
“Thank you.”
You pay the electric bill → You receive electricity.
You pay for childcare → You receive time, space, and support.
You pay for groceries → You receive nourishment for you and your family.
You pay your mortgage → You receive shelter and a place to belong.
You pay taxes → You’ve received income. You made money!!
So let’s begin a new practice:
Thank you, thank you, thank you to every bill.
Each one is proof that you are already receiving.
Receiving is not a weakness.
It is not selfish.
It is not indulgent. For most of us, receiving isn’t something that just happens.
It’s something you practice.
Every breath. Every bill. Every compliment.
Start noticing where you deflect and where you contract.
Start softening those edges.
Say thank you. Let it in.
Even if it feels awkward. Even if it makes you cry.
This is how you become the woman who receives with grace, and builds a life of true abundance, not just financially, but in every possible way.
